When we moved to Florida in 1995 we were, like many other new Florida visitors and residents, dazzled by the neon and glitz of the theme parks. We bought the Disney season passes, we went to see Shamu at Sea World and King Kong at Universal Studios. But it wasn’t long before we were dazzled by Florida in a different way. We started noticing the alligators that sunned themselves in and around many of Central Florida’s lakes. We noticed the ubiquitous fruit stands, often on the edge of orange groves, and that guy with the FRESH SHRIMP sign, selling them out of the back of his truck. We started going to the small-town festivals that celebrated art, music, bicycles, and sometimes the harvest moon.

We’re in love with Florida, but not the Florida you see if you just take a cab from the airport to your Disney hotel. You should take a drive down Old 441 in Lake County. Or climb to the top of the Saint Augustine lighthouse. Go check out the mermaids at Weeki Wachee. That’s where you’ll find the real Florida. And you might see us there, taking pictures of it all.

What you see here is only the beginning. We will be adding festivals as we attend them and cities and landmarks as we visit them. Stop back often to see what's new. Also, check out our blog to hear about where we're going and where we've been, or feel free to email us. We'd love to hear what you think of what we have so far (all questions, comments and even snide remarks are welcome), and we're always taking suggestions of what to shoot next, so let us know what's going on where you are!

Mermaids of Weeki Wachee : On January 6th, 2008 we went to Weeki Wachee Springs. This small town of nine residents has stood as an icon of Florida's culture since 1947 when Newton A. Perry first developed a method for breathing underwater that would allow performers to move freely without the inhibition of scuba diving equipment. A theatre was built in the limestone on one side of the Weeki Wachee Spring and shows have been performed ever since inspiring generations of little girls to want to be mermaids.
We knew the show would be fun but we had no idea just how amazing it would be. The performers are as talented as they are beautiful being able to hold their breath for nearly three minutes and to dive 175 feet into a spring blasting water at the rate of 117 million gallons a day.
First we photographed The Little Mermaid Show based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.
Then we photographed Fish Tails: a salute to the history of Weeki Wachee and demonstrations on just what is required to be a mermaid.
Weeki Wachee is a famous part of Florida history that is a must see. I have always enjoyed live performance but seeing choreography under 20 feet of water is breathtaking.

33rd Annual Mount Dora Bicycle Festival : Cycling enthusiasts converge on Mount Dora for one of its greatest events.
We photographed, in order, Saturday's Yalaha Bakery Ride, and Sunday's Assault on Sugarloaf and Ray's Round Lake Ride. We started by photographing everyone milling about looking great in their cycling gear and then photographed the start of each race. On the Yalaha Bakery Ride, we tried to beat everyone to the bakery but, by the time we arrived, many cyclists were already there. We were impressed!

Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire : Welcome to our gallery of the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire held at Hickory Point near Howey-In-The-Hills and Tavares, Florida. As entertainment goes, this was complete immersion. All of the performers, from roaming characters you meet in passing to the entertainers in their many fabulous shows, were deep in character and provided a great experience. Even the English Accents were authentic. It was like being dropped into a soap opera of 1560 England and we loved it. If you have never been, go next year. Be sure to put aside the entire weekend. Every show is excellent and one day is hardly enough to enjoy it all.
