It's a midlife crisis, really.
When I was little I lived, for a time, with my grandparents. They were world travelers and the neat part for me was when my grandfather would return from the four corners of the earth with slideshows of foreign cultures, ancient architecture and exotic wildlife. Photography was always synonymous with adventure to me.
After graduating from college with a BFA in Technical Direction for Theatre I pursued, for ten years, a career in Design and Production in the Performing Arts.
When Jennifer and I moved to Florida, I transferred my skills over to the prominent themed entertainment and convention industries in Orlando. For twenty years I have been too busy with my "day job" to pursue any other interests. Now that we own a home in Mount Dora, I wanted to use my watercolour brushes that had been collecting dust or, perhaps, get more into collage.
What really grabbed me was photography. I loved the freedom and spontaneity of it. I had spent twenty years focusing lights, hiding seams, and making things fit. I did not want to be crammed in a home studio in exchange for being inside a dark theatre or convention center. Nor did I want the tight control of the other visual arts. I was done controlling things. I wanted to be out in the world capturing the light, texture and personalities chance provides.
It always sounds corny to me to read bios with punch words like "passionate" and "driven" but I really am insanely addicted to this medium. I hope you enjoy the results.
